Santa Juana Reserve
Located 20 km east of Vallenar and reached by the interior road of the valley of the river Huasco. The reservoir was built in 1995 to regulate the river’s waters for irrigation.
It is an artificial lake, 10 km long, with a surface area of 410 hectares. The water is turquoise, making it stand out amidst the dryness of the surrounding area. You can practice water sports such as sailing and rowing here.
The capacity of the reservoir is 160 million cubic meters, which can provide irrigation for 12,000 hectares, in this way supporting the farming industry of the sector.
From the point of view of a feat of engineering, you can appreciate the up-to-date technology used in its construction. On the other hand, you can get a wonderful, panoramic view of the valley from its imposing 115 meters high retaining wall.
