Ruedas de Larmahue
The water wheels are located 77km from Rancagua and 5km from Pichidegua. This ingenious and unique irrigation system dates back to the 18th Century. It allows irrigation of land which has no other means of irrigation. The water wheels, which are joined at the axis by two strong columns, are turned by the water’s current lifting the water and throwing it in to receptacles on the wheel’s perimeter. The majority of the wheels have a diameter of five or six metres with some reaching up to eight metres.
17 out of approximately 40 water wheels were designated as National Heritage Sites in 1998 by Pichidegua Town Council.
