Museo de Sitio Mina El Tránsito
The museum is located in the valley, 26 km from Copiapó and 11 km from Tierra Amarilla. It was inaugurated in 1995 and is the first mining museum to open in this zone. It is located in the Sierra Ojancos, next to the Mina Tránsito, worked during the nineteenth century.
Until 1881 the mine was virtually a town in itself, as it was large mining center with its own school, pharmacy, church and local store. Today, nothing remains of them.
The exhibits are kept in this museum, in what was the manager’s house, created in 1995 by the Municipality of Tierra Amarillla, the Universidad de Atacama and some local businesses.
From the Mina Tránsito you can visit other mines, which are still being worked by piquineros. Inquire in the museum.
