Corral
Corral, with a population of 3,584, is located 22 km from Valdivia and is the principal commercial port of the region. Here arriving cargo is discharged in order to be lightered up the river to the city. It was at this port that the first German settlers arrived in 1850.
The port reached its peak of activity after the construction of the blast furnace, which was destroyed as a result of the 1960 earthquake and tidal wave. The modern, fully mechanized port handles exports and imports in bulk.
You can go to the San Sebastian de la Cruz fort, built in 1764 and now declared a National Monument. You should also visit the Tourist and Museum Information Center of Corral, where you can see an important photographic exhibition of the port.
